Look beyond the country label
Build separate shortlists for Kenya-specific, East African, pan-African and international calls. Read the full location conditions for each. The directory country filter uses explicit country codes, so a regional opportunity without a Kenya code may not appear in that filtered view.
Explain the project’s audience and form
Specify whether you are proposing a book, reporting project, oral-history collection or another form of storytelling. Describe the languages, readers and intended outcome. Do not reshape your book around a funder’s mission unless that mission genuinely fits the work.
Plan the practical costs
Keep the requested currency alongside your working budget in Kenyan shillings. Identify travel, interviews, permissions, editing and any translation you plan to fund. Check payment arrangements and the actual closing time with the funder; a date alone may not tell you when an online portal closes.
