In brief: A residency offers a period and setting for creative work, but it is not automatically a cash grant or an all-expenses-paid stay. Compare what is included, what you must pay and what the host expects you to deliver.
Calculate the real commitment
List application fees, program fees, transport, meals and costs you will still have at home. Ask whether support is paid in advance or reimbursed. Do not treat the headline stipend as the amount available for writing until you understand the full arrangement.
Check whether the setting fits your work
Ask about a private workspace, internet, library access and any equipment you need. Clarify accessibility, caring responsibilities and guest policies early. A beautiful location is not enough if its practical conditions prevent you from doing the proposed work.
Agree on the balance of writing and public work
Record readings, teaching, community activities and reporting expected during the stay. Set a personal manuscript goal that leaves room for those commitments. Keep the host contact and cancellation terms with your application notes.

Is every writing residency fully funded?
No. Confirm the actual offer with the host. A place, accommodation, a fee reduction and a stipend are different forms of support. Budget for anything that is not explicitly included.
